I'm on vacation this week (yipppppeeeeee!), but I'm not gonna leave you hangin.' This week marks another 30 year anniversary - this time Fiona Apple's debut record "Tidal."
Imagine being in your teens and writing this record? And the story of how the album came to be is pretty wild. When Fiona was 17, her self-made demo tape miraculously found its way from her friend Anna, who was babysitting for a music executive, to the hands of Andy Slater. Slater (cool name, bro, no relation, btw) immediately signed on to be Fiona's producer and manager. Together, they devised a sound for the record based on Fiona’s most significant musical inspirations: hip-hop and jazz.
Before recording "Tidal," Fiona had never entered a music studio or even performed a single show. She also had no formal musical background. (jaw drop).
